Jakarta, December 19 2024 – A National Workshop titled “Foresight Indonesia Food System and Economic Growth Towards Indonesia Emas 2045” was successfully held to gather insights and foster discussions on transformative strategies for Indonesia's food system and economic growth. The event, organized by BAPPENAS in collaboration with BRIN, IFPRI, and other strategic partners, focused on developing sustainable and inclusive solutions to realize Indonesia’s vision for 2045.
Key Highlights:
Policy Directions from BAPPENAS
Representing Dr. Vivi Yulaswati, MSc, Deputy for Maritime and Natural Resources at BAPPENAS, Dr. Djarot Indarto emphasized that Indonesia's Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2025-2045 targets economic growth of 8% annually by 2029. Achieving this requires transformative and integrative approaches, particularly in agriculture and food systems.
Innovative Analytical Models
IFPRI introduced the Dynamic Economywide Model of Indonesia (DEWI), an adaptation of the Rural Investment and Policy Analysis (RIAPA) model. This tool is designed to capture complex inter-sectoral interactions within Indonesia’s agrifood ecosystem, providing policymakers with accurate projections and decision-making insights.
Challenges in Agriculture and Food Security
Prof. Dr. Sahara, SP, M.Si, highlighted the challenges in Indonesia’s agriculture, including declining soil fertility, dependency on imports, and the low adoption of technology in farming practices. She also pointed out the stagnation in agricultural productivity and the need for more investment in research and development.
Economic Growth and High-Income Vision
According to BAPPENAS and INDEF representatives, reaching high-income status by 2045 requires a consistent 7-8% economic growth annually. This would involve boosting investments, optimizing technology use, and focusing on high-value agricultural products to increase farmers' incomes and savings.
Environmental Sustainability
The workshop also addressed the triple planetary crisis—climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss—as key barriers to sustainable development. The integration of green economy strategies and circular economic models was proposed to align economic growth with environmental preservation.
Recommendations for Future Growth
- Investing in Technology and Innovation: Enhancing research and development in agriculture and adopting advanced farming technologies.
- Promoting Green Economy Practices: Implementing circular economy principles in food systems, reducing food waste, and utilizing sustainable production methods.
- Policy and Governance: Strengthening holistic and system-based policymaking supported by reliable data and integrated analyses.
- Human Resource Development: Increasing skilled labor through education, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).
- This workshop is part of a broader initiative to create actionable strategies for Indonesia’s food system transformation, ensuring that economic growth is inclusive, sustainable, and resilient. The insights from this event will inform the RPJMN 2025-2029 and help achieve the vision of Indonesia Emas 2045.
